I have now read three books on Enron, including the cut and paste screed "Pipe Dreams." "24 Days" had its moments, but was not as enlightening as "Smartest Guys in the Room", by far the best book to date on Enron. It was written by Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind, two Fortune magazine reporters. It does an excellent job in walking the reader through special purpose entities. While I have no doubt that Lay has culpability, the SPE's were really the creation of Skilling and Fastow. In my opinion, any charges brought Lay are going to be significantly more difficult to prove than those brought against Skilling and Fastow. We can only hope that Fastow is singing his heart out.

The definitive book on Enron will probably not be written until the trials have run their course. Hopefully, it will be written by an academic who can write in plain English. BTW, the Enron trustee has issued three massive reports on Enron. Books written with an agenda, and Briody was guilty of this in The Iron Triangle, are always a bit suspect in my book. Just lay out the facts and let the reader draw their own conclusions.
