Briefing Market Update [Mar02, 2004] :

------------------------------------------------------------------------
10:25AM : Challenger, Gray & Christmas reported that layoff
announcements in February were 77,250, down 34% from 117,556 in January,
and down 44% from February of last year...this is clearly a substantial
improvement, but the layoff data has not correlated well with monthly
payroll figures...the market improved dramatically on the ISM survey on
manufacturing employment, but has gotten no spark from this
data...still, it is likely to reinforce expectations of a decent gain in
February nonfarm payrolls to be reported this Friday...that would be the
sixth straight monthly gain, although at moderate levels overall...NYSE
Adv/Dec 1415/1429, Nasdaq Adv/Dec 1377/1324
