Of the couples married in LA, are they legally married for federal law purposes?

My recollection is that DOMA handled that.

And in the interim, we're going to have a real mess.

That would be a better argument if the mess were unmanageable and non-constructive and the alternatives not so unpalatable. And if we thought that states would be lining up to authorize gay marriage.
