Boston, Mass.: Hi Tucker, the FCC 527 organization rulings have been getting a decent amount press lately, and I have a few questions in this regard. Can FEC rulings restricting the operations of these organizations be overturned by Federal Courts if they are deemed to restrict free speech too much, or is this highly unlikely given that the supreme court upheld McCain-Feingold? Secondly how do you think these upcoming rulings by the FCC on 527 organizations will affect the presidential race? Thanks.

Tucker Carlson: Interesting question, the answer to which is too long to explain here. There's a terrific (and most importantearly written) piece in the new Weekly Standard on 527s. Very worth reading if you're interested. Bottom line: The ruling definitely hurts Democrats.

That's the political effect. What bothers me is that almost no one ever stands back far enough to see the larger picture: Attempts to control political advertising are attempts to control political speech. Obviously. Aren't we supposed to be against that?
