Blast hits oil pipeline in nortern Iraq

A large hit an oil pipelinenear the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk causing a huge fire but no casualties, police chief Turhan Yussef said.

"The explosion happened at 11.15am (0615 AEDT). An explosive device was placed under the pipeline at Al-Riad, 35km west of Kirkuk," he said.

The blast, which hit the main oil line leading to the Baiji refinery 200km north of Baghdad, caused a huge fire that was still burning at the time of Yussef's report.

The oil city of Kirkuk is a hotbed of ethnic tensions among the Arab, Kurdish and Turkmen communities and attacks are regularly launched there on the police, US troops and oil lines.
