I posted this on another thread first:

There is no mistake to admit. The status of the WMDs has not been conclusively proven. Even Kay acknowledged the plausibility of the scenario involving transfer to Syria, and the fact that satellite photos and other evidence shows that some kind of material was transported en masse across the border. However, they are in no position to verify what was in the shipments.

Why would Saddam do such a thing? To discredit Bush, in the hope of gaining political support to reverse the overthrow of his regime. Remember, when he emerged from his hole, he declared himself ready to "negotiate". Little did he realize that was not an option.

I find it more ludicrous to believe that the various intelligence agencies were completely in the dark about Iraqi capabilities, and that Saddam invited an invasion by acting guilty, than that he had determined that it was futile to resist the initial invasion to any great extent, and hoped by guerrilla harrassment and the embarrasment of Bush on the issue of WMDs to regain power.
