Drawing parallels and similarities between two things is clearly an attempt equate the two things.

No.

If the intention is not to equate the two things, then what is the purpose of drawing the parallel?

Pointing at the similarities.

So - I don't need to google anything to know that the several hundred thousand Greek refugees created when Turkey invaded Cyprus 3 decades ago

That's all you need to know about the subject, is it?

Well, I've got news for you, my dear friend.

Let's start like this:
(1) Why do you think Turkey sent troops to Northern Cyprus three decades ago?
(2) How on earth can Turkey be "currently oppressing Greeks" if they have no power over the Greek side, separated by the Green Line?
(3) Why would Greeks withdraw their to Turkey joining the EU if Turkey was oppressing them?

You also need to explain how Turkey is "currently" oppressing the Kurds. You must have forgotten to refer to it in this post.
