As to Chesterton, I have finally formulated what it is I so detest about him: Every word he wrote about anything was secondary to his endless preaching. Of course, I suppose the same observation could be applied against Ayn Rand. But she respected reason based on facts, while Chesterton viewed life through the aquarium glass of a childish frailty. Once he knew all there was to know about God and religion, the rest became a mere mockery of every contrary viewpoint. This is the wonderful thing about certainty: it frees one to indulge in a withering wit. What was most annoying about his bon mots was his conceit that he was right. One hates to see brilliance being used in the wrong way...
