They can live for years but it's passed on through saliva and scat. Cats can be vaccinated and not get it but this one hadn't been. If he was an indoor cat it would have been ok but he roams and fights.

Earlier this year we were keeping 3 kittens for a friend. She had gotten them from the barn down the road. 2 had lukemia and had to be put down.
