IMPORTANT SECURITY ALERT

On March 2 and March 3, 2004, new variants of a worm known as Beagle (also known as Bagle) were released on the internet. The Beagle worm affects all modern Windows operating systems (Windows 95, 98, NT, ME, XP, and 2000). This worm will attempt to send copies of itself out in an effort to spread the infection using addresses which appear to come from your ISP. The worm arrives as a .zip or .pif attachment in your email and contains a message which appears to come from CoreComm. These messages do not come from CoreComm and CoreComm will never send you a .zip or .pif attachment in this manner. It is good practice, if you are not expecting an attachment, to delete attachments or e-mail the sender with questions regarding the attachments. More information about these worms can be found at the following websites:

sarc.com@mm.html
sarc.com@mm.html

As of 10:30 AM EST on March 3, 2004 the variants Beagle.J and Beagle.K have been blocked by our inbound and outbound mailservers for all of our customers. Please note that this block is in place only for customers that download their mail directly from the CoreComm mailservers. This blocking will not protect users that run their own mailservers or have their mail forwarded elsewhere. This block has been put in place using sample copies of this virus that has entered our mailcluster. If you receive a copy of this virus dated after 10:30 AM EST on March 3, 2004 please e-mail support@core.com with this information and the name of the mailclient you are using to download mail. We can then instruct you as to how to redirect the message to us so that we may retain the virus in its original form.

IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE BEEN INFECTED, the following instructions will guide you through removing the Beagle worm from your computer:

1) If you are using Windows ME or Windows XP, disable system restore. Instructions on how to turn off system restore can be found here:

"How to disable or enable Windows Me System Restore" service1.symantec.com

"How to turn off or turn on Windows XP System Restore" service1.symantec.com

2) Scan your computer for viruses. We recommend using an online virus scanner, such as the ones found at:

housecall.antivirus.com

or

security.symantec.com

Additional virus scanning and removal can be provided by using an antivirus program known as Stinger. You can download McAfee AVERT Stinger here:

vil.nai.com

Click on the blue text that states:
Download Stinger.exe

3) Once you have downloaded Stinger to your computer, disconnect from the Internet. Until the virus infection is removed, an infected computer will continue to send out copies of the virus in an attempt to spread the infection. Now, run the Stinger program to scan your hard drive for viruses.

4) Once Stinger has completed scanning your computer, if you are running anti-virus software on your computer, it would be wise to update your virus definitions. If you do not have any anti-virus software installed on your computer, we would recommend obtaining some for your own protection. There are many anti-virus packages to choose from, in our experience Norton Anti-Virus is an excellent anti-virus program.
