In spanish the "e" is an "eh" sound. So pronouncing "tres" as "trey" is incorrect. The "a" sound is similar to the "ah" sound you make when the doctor tells you to open your mouth and say "ahhh."

You do get the strong "a" sound with the combination of "a" and "y," such as in "Mamay."

But then why should you listen to me, I've been wrong before, lol.
