South African Miners Threaten to Strike
By Saul Singer Posted: 3/15/2004

(Rapaport… March 15, 2004) South Africa’s National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is threatening to call a national strike in protest to job losses caused by the appreciation of the rand. According to the Business Day, the NUM has lodged a section 77 notice of the Labour Relations Act with the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) claiming the mining companies were not addressing the problem of job losses properly. This gives workers the right to strike to promote or defend their socioeconomic interests. It appears that the proposed strike will be delayed as Nedlac attempts to broker a resolution between the interested parties.

Over the last year there have been employee cut-backs at De Beers, BHP Billiton and SouthernEra as well as the suspension of production at the Klipspringer joint venture diamond mine as a direct result of the strong rand.
