Let's see, you're head of a party that has long been suspect of at least pinko tendencies and now your going to do exactly what the COmmunists want? I doubt it. This is why China didn't get diplomatic recognition until Nixon was Prexy. WHO was going to accuse Nixon of being soft on Communism? The Dems wouldn't; they wanted the recognition anyway. The moderate right wouldn't; he's one of theirs. THe extreme right might, but who pays attention to them? But a Dem being nice to the Commies is asking for it. Vietnam? Unlikely.
