It is a good story. It's made the rounds in various re-berthings, so to speak. :)

I've seen it written as the USS Enterprise approaching the ship canal for the Alameda Naval Air Station Moorage in San Francisco Bay.

The joke is probably apochryphal, but it is a true story that the Enterprise did "miss" the ship canal at low tide on one approach about 10 years and became mired in the bay mud. Quite embarrassing to the skipper, inasmuch as he was held fast until the tide came back in, and it was hard to miss a 1,000 footer sitting absolutely dead in the water with a slight list. <g>
