We are heading towards a cliff wrt oil dependence

That survey, was put out by the wood institute, for a purpose. Experts have said for the last 20 yrs, that production would have peaked by now. They keep on finding new reserves, and improve production techniques. Now with the ocean opening up, there should be plenty of potential new sites. Not to mention tar sands should be economical in the $50/bbl range, and shale oil, in the $60 -, 70 dollar/ bbl. Running out isn't the problem, as much as costs.

I hate to keep beating a dead horse, but I think nuclear will take over electricity, and heat pumps, the heating part, within 20 yrs. Cars, I think will go to fuel cells. Both nuclear, and fuel cells will be driven by pollution as much as costs. Trucks, because of power requirements, would have to stay with diesel.
