I think you need to review the events. I don't think there was a choice. Nor did the House or Senate. He left because he knew he would be impeached if he didn't. And impeaching AND convicting a President is pretty tough. We've never done it, but he would have been the first.

Barry Goldwater was one of the Senators that went over to tell him he would lose a Senate vote, remember? That should tell you something.

And I agree, the WH is no place for a nice guy. Carter abundantly proved that. A dismal, dismal failure.
