Then, in the 1990s, China's fledging domestic PC vendors entered the fray and grabbed market share--almost overnight. In 2003, for example, Chinese PC makers held six of the top 10 positions in terms of unit shipments in that nation, according to the latest rankings from iSuppli Corp. (See top 10 rankings in chart below) In total, Chinese computer companies held more than 50 percent of the PC business in China, said Nancy Dang, who watches the market for the El Segundo-based research firm. China's Lenovo, also known as the Legend Group, has been the top PC maker in that China for some time. Last year, that company had 27 percent of the PC market in China, followed by China's Founder with 8 percent. The top multinational is Dell, which had only 7 percent market share in China last year, according to iSuppli. While China's domestic suppliers continue to gain ground, the nation has become a major producer of PCs. China's production of PCs is expected to hit 48 million units in 2004, up 29 percent over 2003, according to a report from iSuppli. By 2008, China's PC output will reach 90 million units, accounting for 37 percent of the world's production. "This expected brisk expansion is due in part to the accelerating migration of PC production to China, plus stable growth of the domestic market," Dang said in the report. By 2008, iSuppli believes that the share held by desktop PCs will decline to as low as 40 percent of the total PC unit production. Mobile PCs is expected to rise to 54 percent of the total output at that time, according to Dang. Top 10 PC Vendors in China for 2003 ...siliconstrategies.com
