By some coinidink, I just started digging a pea bed yesterday. I haven't gardened since the divorce, but I've got a friend who lacks sunlight, so...

You don't have to get so elaborate with your bird protection. You can just lay plastic or some floating row covers (Tuf-bel, etc), on the bed. Take it off when you see the sprouts. Plastic runs a little hotter, but the plants can pop thru holes in the live netting, so it's a wash which one you use. If you have climbing peas, just weight the edges down with your stakes.

For more elaborate multi-purpose covers, get some wire (I think it is concrete wire; the stuff you use when pouring concrete.) I think our pieces were about 10 feet long. Bend it into a semi-cylinder; can stabilize the ends with PVC. This gives you a hoop which you can drape with plastic, frost protectors, bird netting, shade netting, etc.
