This new, grassroots gold discovery was made by Intrepid personnel performing regional reconnaissance in the company's San Cristobal project area. Mapping and trenching programs have yielded a bulk tonnage gold target with persistent gold mineralization over significant widths hosted in an extensive hydrothermal system. This new discovery is located approximately 15 kilometres west of the Gigante project, where Intrepid reported drilling results last week. To date, 158 channel samples are reported from these trenches covering a strike length of 225 metres. Of these samples, 37 per cent returned assays greater than 1.0 gram per tonne gold and 28 per cent returned values greater than 2.0 grams per tonne gold. Individual channel samples have assayed as high as 15.6 grams per tonne gold over 1.6 metres, however, gold values are very consistent and commonly in the 0.5- to three-gram-per-tonne range. "We are very pleased with this virgin discover and wish to give full credit to our Central America exploration team headed by Marco Montecinos," said Laurence Curtis, president and chief executive officer. "With last week's initial drilling results on the Gigante target in eastern San Cristobal and today's announcement from western San Cristobal, our team's persistence in the district is clearly paying dividends on Intrepid's seven-year investment in El Salvador." Trench sampling to date has focused on a package of locally saprolitic, oxidized and weathered dacite, silicified breccias, quartz veins, silicified tuffs, and sediments. Anomalous to strong gold mineralization has been confirmed in the first four trenches to be assayed. Significant sample intervals from trenches 1 to 4 are summarized below. William McGuinty is Intrepid's qualified person on this project. Oro Nuevo appears to be underlain by a two-kilometre-long, north-south-trending structural zone which forms a "horst." The horst is flanked to the east and west by lithic tuffs and lacustrine sediments, while the core comprises dacite porphyry rock which may represent a felsic dome complex. Gold mineralization occurs along the Guapinol fault in the interior of the horst structure and is most evident at the intersection of this fault with a second north-northeasterly trending structure. Metal ratios suggest this is a high gold to silver epithermal system in contrast to other identified zones on the 200-square-kilometre San Cristobal property as described in previous news. Metal chemistry indicates the system is enriched in gold, barium and manganese, but depleted in copper, lead, zinc, silver, mercury, arsenic and antimony. Trenches 3 and 4 have been extended to cover the eastern contact of the altered package. Trenches 5 to 7 are currently being sampled and mapped in detail. The zone uncovered by the trenching program now extends along a strike length of 400 metres. In addition, gold mineralization has been identified for well over a kilometre along the strike of the Guapinol fault and along several other subparallel structures. Intrepid's geologists are currently mapping and sampling the entire range to fully define the extent of the mineralization.
