The running mate's personal qualities does not make much of a difference. Instead it is now two people who are on the stump taking the image to the masses. Wider personal coverage.

And after a good fight, the supporters of Dean and Edwards will take some time to warm upto Kerry. You cannot expect them to change overnight. Some are even in a rebellious mood and could likely say they would vote for Nader. So that Nader 6% would swing to Kerry later putting him ahead of Bush at least in the polls.
