I lived in CA in 1985 for less than a year. Other than that brief period, I've lived in Maryland since 1973.

Actually I am comparing apples to oranges, my standard of living has risen during the time when increases in my expenses have lagged the CPI. If you see my response to Darfot, I detailed by just how much. I don't assume that my experience is wide spread. I've done enough analysis of other families various household budgets to see that people with children are far more subject to increases in their household budgets. That said, mostly what people see as price inflation though tends to be them steadily increasing their lifestyle ahead of their incomes (bigger house, nicer cars, more movies, restaurants and trips).

Certain expenses you expect to go up as you age, like health insurance and medical expenses so to discover the price inflation you have to compare the prices for someone who is the age you were at the beginning of the time frame.
