If Bush has to run on "culture war" issues instead of his economic and foreign policy record (and I can understand why he would) he will be lucky to pull of another razor-thin victory. Culture wars require demonizing a huge chunk of the electorate to mobilize another chunk. I have never seen any polls that say a majority of Americans want Big Brother in every corner of their lives enforcing one Administration's particular views 24/7.

General social values tend to become steadily more liberal over time. Fighting that tide is a losing proposition; they may win the occasional battle but the war is largely decided in advance.

Too bad more folks can't come visit the Netherlands and see how well a genuinely tolerant society works - without many of the HUGE BIG BAD AWFUL problems that America's Puritanism only exacerbates.

Fascinating that people would listen more to Stern than Bush himself. That's a riot. Maybe that's why Limbaugh did all those drugs, trying to look cool.
