Among the many straw men being erected for slaughter by the otherwise powerless Senate Democrats is the matter of the recent Bush Administration financial report containing an evaluation that it is good for America when products that can be made more cheaply elsewhere are shipped offshore. The howl from Democrats like Tom Daschle and Dick Durbin is that this is tantamount to President Bush saying it’s okay to ship American jobs overseas. The Senate Republicans would do well to confront this head on, and not hide from it as the Democrats hope they will. If indeed the goods can be made more cheaply elsewhere, someone will make them more cheaply there. That is a simple and inarguable truth of Modern Business 101. And if we follow the “Democrat Plan” to continue to produce them here anyway, what do we actually gain? A few months for American manufacturers to continue employing their workers until they find out that they are going under because someone else is making the same product more cheaply elsewhere? I guess if you’re a Democrat, that’s a smart idea… that’s “good” for America… That, in fact, is a plan for America’s absolute financial ruin, yet it is what the Senate Democrats are screeching for, in unison. The right thing to do is either to figure out how to make them more cheaply here at home, in which case the jobs stay here in America, or to shift our county’s focus to doing and making those things which we do better and more cost-effectively than anybody else in the world. The sooner we stop consoling ourselves with the false Democrat-bravado that “Someone will want to buy our buggy whips!?”, and get to the needed business of adjusting our workplace to the new and unique challenges of the modern economy, the better off America will be. We should thank Almighty God that we have a president who is willing to ignore the populist “easy route” to financial ruin as prescribed by the Senate Democrats. We should encourage our Senate Republicans to point out to America how blessed we are that it is George W. Bush steering this country, and not some Democrat who would sacrifice our nation’s well being on the altar of partisan political expedience. The very fact that the Democrats, including John Kerry, are willing to gamble with America’s financial future for the illusory and deceitful gain of a very temporary political advantage is proof positive that they are not qualified to stand at America’s helm right now. For all his quirks, George W. Bush calls it exactly the way that it is, and has repeatedly proven his dedication to doing what is right for America even if it isn’t immediately popular. That is the mark of a true leader, and America is lucky to have such a man in the White House… now more than ever.
