According to the most recent Grade Eight Proficiency Exam results, the scores for eighth graders at our middle school declined from 2001-2002 scores in all three categories.

They know the way to fix that. Change the tests. :>)

I posted a article from a NYC Ed expert a while back on the 3rd grade promotion problem. He claimed that it did not work to hold them back. Glad to see the teachers coming in on the other side.

Too bad we don't have JohnM around anymore. He lives in NJ and has a daughter who teaches Special Ed in the NYC system. I am following the path of the changes this year with interest.

I think the core problem in teaching is tied up with our Teacher's Colleges. They have a common heritage from the Days of Dewey of a lot of ways to do things that don't work that they won't give up. It all came out of the same Socialist/Freud/Dewey period. All three of these have failed.
