Banc of America Securities said the current weakness in Intel (nasdaq: INTC - news - people ) shares "is a buying opportunity for what will be a very strong performance" for the company in the second half of 2004." Banc of America said, "In our opinion, Intel continues to be one of the best-positioned semiconductor companies in our sector to benefit from what we expect will be a strong year for semiconductors." The research firm said "the necessary ingredients are in place for the company to show solid performance in 2004." Banc of America is projecting gross margins of 65.3% in the fourth quarter of 2004, which exceeds the prior peak of 65% in 2000. Intel, which Banc of America rates at "buy" with a 12-month price target of $39, is one of the research firm's two top picks in the sector. The second top pick is class A shares of Agere Systems (nyse: AGRa - news - people ), rated at "buy" with a price target of $5. Banc of America's least favorite in the sector is TriQuint Semiconductor (nasdaq: TQNT - news - people ), which it rates at "neutral" with a price target of $8.>>
