Ted was talking about coal running out in 149 years. 149 years from now we could have deep well geothermal power plants that don't need a geological hot spot right at the surface. We might also have more efficient ways to deliver electricity or perhaps plants that use the electricity generated from geothermal power plants to create hydrogen which will power cars...

Geothermal has its costs and problems but if it was the only option we would make it work. The only reason it might not become a significant power source is if other sources work better. If we have cheap fusion geothermal probably isn't going anywhere. My point is not that each of these alternatives can and will provide the answer but that there are a number of alternatives and whichever one works best will provide the answer. There is nothing magical about oil. Right now oil is the answer because its cheap and easy. If we use up most of the oil the next most optimal solution of combination of solutions will be used
