The role the UN plays is primarily one of providing legitimacy. The US lacks legitimacy in Iraq. The UN has what the US needs in Iraq -- legitimacy. Economic, political and military control of Iraq by the US will never have any legitimacy. That is the reason for wanting the UN involved -- it is also the reason why the UN was targeted. The UN can do what the US cannot do -- and so it is feared more than the US is feared.
