I'll go you one better. No tax should be regressive although I agree that most are. Taxes need to be PROGRESSIVE. In other words, those who make more pay a higher percentage of their income in stages.

This isn't possible for things like sales taxes.

This is why the right-wing want a flat rate income tax or no income tax and simply consumption taxes. Both ideas are regressive.

People need X amount for basic expenses. $100 for someone making $10K/year means a great deal more than $100 for someone making $200K/year. If they both buy $1000 worth of food and pay $100 of taxes on it, the one making $10K/year can no longer make the rent or the car payment or the electricity bill.

Many of us really confuse merit and luck. None of us make it to where we are without the entire organizational structure of civilization. That we are born in the US in this age rather than in Afghanistan 300 years ago is LUCK not MERIT.

It's very interesting that self made super rich individuals actually understand this concept much better than their middle class counterparts.
