Here's just one example of why you have put your money on the wrong horse's a$$ if you are in the race toward democracy. Recently, President Aristide of Haiti was kidnapped and removed to the Central African Republic, which itself had suffered a military coup a year ago and is being led by a thug who is acceptable to the French and to the Bush Administration. In the last elections in Haiti in 2000, Aristide won 92% of the popular vote. He remains wildly popular with the poor who inhabit such slums at Cite Soleil. But Aristide was anathema to the tiny elite who live in Petionville and control the nation's wealth. One of the principal backers of the coup d'etat is a businessman named Andy Apaid. Mr. Apaid is a Lebanese-American. Not even a citizen of Haiti. But he owns sweatshops in Haiti where his workers are paid US$ 1.60 per day for very hard labor. One of Aristide's goals after the election was to raise Haiti's minimum wage to a standard where workers could actually afford to live on their incomes. This seems to be a basic human right, yet Mr. Apaid was adamantly opposed to this change to the law in Haiti because it would have an impact on his fabulous income. Thus, Apaid promoted and helped to pay for the dismissal of his business enemy, Aristide. The Bushies were on Apaid's side in this struggle. The Bushies are happy that Haitians slowly starve to death on $1.60 per day wages. By any standard of decency, this is unconscionable. And yet, this is what the U.S. government wants. I think it is shameful. Don't try to confuse the issues with fancy talk about "liberty and freedom" as King George does. That is simply a lie. The liberty that George Bush supported in Haiti was the liberty of one Lebanese-American businessman to exploit thousands of Haitians, cheating them of their dignity and the right to organize, to petition their government and their right to struggle for a decent standard of living. George Bush is on the side of immorality in this struggle.
