''If enacted, this legislation could result in consumer pressure to curtail our use of low-cost operations outside the US, which could reduce the cost benefits we currently realise from using them,'' GE wrote in the filing.

The mob will never understand the case for free markets even though it is an extraordinarily simple one. They prefer to have their emotional buttons pushed by politicians eager to mislead them.

If our standard of living is four times that of another country it means that they are less productive on average than the American on average given the training, capital, land and so on that each has. If Americans are four times as productive it is wasteful to keep them doing a job where they aren't at least four times as productive as their foreign counterpart because it is better for them to do a job where they are more productive and use that money to buy the goods from abroad from the less productive foreigner. To inhibit this natural movement of jobs with tariffs and restrictions results in a lower standard of living for both countries.

It's not unlike my argument with my husband over us doing the cement block foundation on our out building. Even though he works in construction, laying block is not what he does or does well. We did the job on a Saturday, with me helping him mix mortar and cut blocks. Not a fun job, laying cement blocks. OTOH the two of us working a whole Saturday doing what we both do for work would make 6 times the money we'd pay a guy who is a regular block layer to do the job on a week day and we'd have a better foundation because the guy would know WTF he was doing. By doing the job ourselves we deprived the block layer his income and reduced our own hourly rate to below that of the block layer.
