It's called being a moderate, seeing both sides and being able to work both sides of the aisle. That's why Kerry usually works with McCain. They differ on many issues but find a lot of common ground, each one adjusting his stance a little until they can work together. Bush on the other hand is very divisive and even alienated Republicans who are not far rightwing.
