I just listened to a first hand account on TV of the events resulting in Kerry's Silver Star. The account was related by one of the crew who was there and right behind Kerry when he shot the fleeing Viet Cong who was armed with a rocket launcher. Kerry's boat had beached within 10 feet of a spider hole where the Viet Cong was hiding. The distance was too close for the VC to launch the rocket so the VC fled towards a lean too where he could fire at the boat. Kerry saved the boat and the crew by taking out the VC. The crew was then able to clear out a VC base camp. Obviously, Kerry deserved the Silver Star.
