It was the cocaine. Bush failed to show for his physical in May, 1972 because he was still toxic with cocaine and that was the first time that TANG incorporated a drug test into the standard physical. Bush was caught on the horns of a dilemma. Fail to show up for the test, and lose his wings, or fail the test and face a dishonorable discharge. He made the practical choice for the addict.
