Two weeks ago Greenspan, slavering and rubbing his withered paws together, was talking reducing SS benefits. (btw, that hangnail celebrated his 80 or 90th birthday yesterday) And the WH response was: Republican lawmakers distanced themselves (from Greenspan)....with a once-projected $5.6 trillion 10-year surplus now gone, they are short of money needed to set up such accounts. Presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., in Toledo, Ohio, promised, "If I'm president, we're simply not going to do it." Fellow candidate Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., called it "an outrage' for Greenspan to advocate Social Security cuts while also supporting efforts to make Bush's tax cuts permanent — at a cost of $1 trillion over a decade. President Bush said he had not seen Greenspan's comments and said his position was that Social Security benefits "should not be changed for people at or near retirement." usatoday.com We got to deal with Social Security as well.
