It now appears that the hatred and desire for vengeance transcend time over the centuries to find fulfillment in the present. Yea, the Golden Rule ever works inexorably --- As You soweth, so shall you reap! =================================================== Al-Qaeda claims Madrid, Istanbul bombings DUBAI - A statement attributed to Al-Qaeda and sent to the London-based daily Al-Quds Al-Arabi claimed responsibility for the deadly series of bombings in Madrid on Thursday and a suicide attack on a masonic lodge in Istanbul two days earlier. The statement, signed 'Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades/Al-Qaeda' and dated March 11 said the strike in Madrid 'was a part of the settling of old scores with crusader Spain, America's ally in its war against Islam'. Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar was a fervent ally in the US-led war in Iraq and Madrid still deploys 1,300 troops in the war-torn country. The claims could not be independently verified but Al-Quds Al-Arabi has previously relayed several claims by Al-Qaeda. The statement added: 'Where is America, O Aznar? Who is going to protect you, Britain, Japan, Italy and other collaborators from us?' In an audiotape attributed to terror mastermind Osama bin Laden and aired by the pan-Arab television station Al-Jazeera on Oct 8, the Al-Qaeda chief threatened attacks in several countries, including Spain. Announced the taped voice: 'We reserve the right to retaliate at the proper time and place against all countries that take part in this injust war (against Iraq), namely Britain, Spain, Australia, Poland, Japan and Italy.' Thursday's statement also claimed responsibility for the killing of 19 Italian soldiers and civilians in southern Iraq last November and threatened to carry out attacks on American targets in Yemen. Tape in Arabic, detonators found in Madrid In Madrid, Interior Minister Angel Acebes said a tape with Quranic verses in Arabic and seven detonators were found in a van suspected of being linked to the deadly attacks, which killed at least 190 people and wounded nearly 1,250 others. The van, which had been reported stolen, was discovered in the east of the capital. Spanish monarch appeals for national unity Spain's King Juan Carlos appealed for national unity after he and Queen Sofia comforted survivors of Thursday's bomb attacks that killed at least 190 people at Madrid railway stations and trains. He said in a televised address following the attacks: 'Terrorist barbarity has today plunged Spain into the deepest grief in the face of which we must stand united and strong. 'Men, women and children ... have been brutally confronted by death and suffering. 'A nightmare has struck showing terrorism's cruel face. Your King is suffering with all of you and shares your indignation.' The royal couple were accompanied by their son and heir Prince Felipe and his fiancee Letizia Ortiz as they visited a hospital in central Madrid. -- AFP
