Ron Chernow in his wonderful book "The House of Morgan" tinyurl.com describes the tipping point when Wall Street lost its integrity entirely. He dates it to the ascension of Ronald Reagan and the reign of de-regulation. From the Reagan era forward, a man's word is no longer his bond on Wall Street. The investment bankers no longer think about relationships, but rather about how best to profit off their customers.

It's been a rather unfortunate development in the nature of human relations.
