The neocons have in fact taken over the republican party. Bush started out as a more or less typical democrat, if anything more of a theocon than a neocon.

Then Bush, who is a decidely soft man, had to make some very hard decisions. He turned to the neocons, to whom for many years the middle east was not only the issue, but the only issue.

And here we are two years later, racking up debt and with wretched basket case of a country on our hands.
