LAHORE:

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) selectors, headed by Wasim Bari, on Friday recalled all-rounder Shahid Afridi, off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq, and middle-order batsman Younis Khan when they announced a 16-member squad for the first two one-day internationals against India. Indian players will arrive here on Wednesday for their first tour of Pakistan in 14 years. They play a warm-up match at Gaddafi Stadium on Thursday ahead of the first of five one-day matches in Karachi on March 13. The second ODI will be played in Rawalpindi on March 16.

Squad: Imran Farhat, Yasir Hameed, Yousuf Youhana, Inzamamul Haq (captain), Shahid Afridi, Misbahul Haq, Abdul Razzaq, Shoaib Malik, Moin Khan (wicketkeeper), Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Sami, Younis Khan, Shabbir Ahmad, Rao Iftikhar Anjum, Rana Naveedul Hasan, Saqlain Mushtaq.

Chief selector Bari said: “The team has been selected in consultation with Pakistan captain Inzamamul Haq and coach Javed Miandad. The team is well balanced in all departments of the game.” He said Asim Kamal and Danish Kaneria had not been included as they were more useful in longer version of the game and would be considered for the Tests. “As regards Afridi, he has been included because he is a utility player in the limited overs cricket besides being a very fine fielder. We needed more all-rounders to cope against the Indian batting powerhouse and that’s why we have included three all-rounders with Afridi among them,” Bari maintained.

Afridi, who has played 176 one-day matches, said he would do his best to come good against India. “I know the importance of playing against India and will do my best to come good and help the team win,” said Afridi. The 24-year-old holds the world record for the fastest century in a one-day match, scoring 100 runs off 37 balls against Sri Lanka in 1997.

Saqlain has fallen out of favour with the selectors after playing against South Africa last year. Saqlain, who also plays for English county Surrey, last year criticised coach Javed Miandad for omitting him and had to apologise before a disciplinary committee for his outburst. “Saqlain can prove to be handy in both types of cricket because of his experience. He also has a good record against India,” Bari added.

Another all-rounder in the squad is Rana Naveedul Hassan, who played two one-day games in Sharjah last year. Pacer Rao Iftikhar Anjum, the second highest wicket-taker behind Naveedul Hassan in Pakistan’s current domestic season, is uncapped. Pakistan’s pace attack will be led by tearaway Shoaib Akhtar who will be supported by Mohammad Sami, all-rounder Abdur Razzaq and Rao Iftikhar whom the chief selector expects to be a “surprise” against the famed Indian line-up. The 23-year-old Rao Iftikhar bowls at about 135 kmph and is a good line and length bowler. His consistent outswingers and ability to extract bounce prompted the selectors to include him in the squad. Also included in the squad is Shabbir Ahmad, who is just back from Australia where he had gone to correct his suspect bowling action.

Regarding Naveedul Hasan, Misbahul Haq and Rao Iftikhar, Bari said they had been selected due to their performance in the domestic circuit. Chief selector said the players appearing in the Quaid-e-Azam Cup and Trophy would be considered for selection in the remaining three one-day matches. The third one-day will be played in Peshawar on March 19 while Lahore will host the fourth and fifth one-day internationals on March 21 and 24.

Skipper Inzamam said he was pleased with the composition of the team that had the best players available. “I am quite happy. The best players who were available have been picked in the squad,” he said.
