US panel rejects latest China import curb request

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. International Trade Commission rejected a request from American bed spring manufacturers Monday for emergency protection against imports from China.

The independent trade panel's 6-0 vote marked the fifth consecutive time American companies have failed in their effort to win special import relief under a provision of China's entry into the World Trade Organization in December 2001.

The ITC said innerspring imports from China were not entering the United States in large enough volumes to justify imposing emergency restrictions.

China's $125 billion trade surplus with the United States has raised concerns about growing U.S. job losses to the Asian industrial giant.

U.S. manufacturers complain Beijing's decade-old practice of pegging its currency at 8.28 yuan to the dollar gives Chinese competitors an unfair advantage by artificially depressing the price of their goods.
