I agree that reporters should investigate and report any organized effort to trigger a reaction or to skew the natural reaction. As for whether the reporters would know of some "conspiracy" right out of the gun, they probably wouldn't. It would take a while to see a pattern, if there is one, emerging. The pieces should be recognizable by now. They wouldn't necessarily have been last week.It appears the families were given talking points. That wouldn't surprise me. There was a lot of that going on back when. The families were peppered with talking points from various groups trying line up support for this or that. But it wouldn't surprise me, either, if a lot of the families independently and genuinely resented any politician using what they have shown they consider their own personal tragedy, especially if they don't like the politician. Remember that, statistically speaking, about half of them, just as the rest of the country, would support someone other than Bush. As I recall, that group was very possessive and demanding about their tragedy. They wouldn't be shy about speaking out. You can't just dismiss all the negative sentiment as manipulation. Those who may be stirring up trouble can't create negative sentiments where there are none. Fab tge flames, give them air time, but not create them out of whole cloth. I haven't seen the commercials. From the clips I've seen and what I've read, the usage doesn't seem inappropriate to me. But they need to be careful to not press it too far.
