We pay taxes on property all the time--real estate comes to mind. My point is that if you eliminate the death tax other rates will be higher in areas more crucial to growth. Please give me an example of all the costs that make this tax more inefficient to collect than any other. mike

The estate tax has always been a net loser, it is horribly inefficient, with controversy over the value of every asset other than publicly listed stocks ("how much is that vase that grandma had in her window worth?").

Its enactment was motivated not so much by revenue concerns, as concerns that a handful of families could one day rule the United States due to their assets.
