Instead, Mandarin is the lingua franca of China and I doubt that there are many people who could be classified as "best minds" who failed to learn it in school. It would be a hell of a trick to get through college not speaking the language that the classes were taught in. I really don't know how you could miss these facts, when, for example, the Tibetans have been complaining for decades that the Chinese force them to speak in Chinese.
