China has a huge population with intelligence distribution that fits a normal bell curve. Most of its people are not getting their Phd's in the Western world. If the government can stand out of the way and let its people do its own thing a la Hong Kong, China can have a very prosperous future. The Chinese language is still a huge barrier that China has to over come. That is not going to be easy. Hong Kong had a good percentage of its citizens with a working knowledge of english. That was one of the reasons for its success. It will take at least 100 years before China can educate all its people to current day Western World standards. Who knows how long it will take for them to establish a set of laws that can do justice for its own people. As for their government, the sooner they can establish legitamacy the better. In other words, where does HuJinTao get his mandate to govern? For those of us to worry that China may take over any time soon is ridiculous. The best policy for us is to help ensure that China can succeed in creating a reasonably egalitarian society where most people can participate in basic consumption (if not aspirational consumption) the sooner the better. In short, we can do good for ourselves if we can help do good for China. We can prosper, they can prosper, and the world can prosper. It could be a win, win, win situation. There are really no alternatives. We have to all work together to make life on earth better for everyone. Go to your place of worship to talk about the after life. As for ethnic and racial pride - forgetaboutit. That is just a lot of garbage. Mary
