I think you could draw a generational line, where over the line folks demand respect for the office, under the line anything goes.
That line would be older than me - 50 - and younger than my mother - 85. Probably, anyone who came of age before Nixon would be an office respector. I broke my political teeth watching "Rowen and Martin's Laugh-in", but was partially influenced by my parents' tisk tisking and saying
"Isn't that an awful thing to say about the President?"

If not the man, at least the Office must be treated with respect.
