Actually, one could consider it the historicization of meaning: if there is no God, man must lose himself in a larger cause, to validate his existence. The national community is the quasi- natural generator of values, and seeks to express itself in relation to other nations in order to make a mark on history. The State is created to mobilize the masses on behalf of the nation; to this end, it acts as arbiter of the various interests of society, seeking to create solidarity and enhance efficiency; and, in the meantime, it is in a position to advance national glory, whether through the encouragement of cultural achievement or through force of arms..........
