SS will gradually morph into an entirely or at least primarily means tested benefit/taxation scheme. As social policy that may be inevitable and may also not be such a bad idea, if the alternative is subjecting the elderly to poverty and lack of basic medical care or, alternatively, taxing wages at 20 percent or more to pay benefits even to the affluent. I think calling it a Ponzi scheme is a bit extreme, though it does illustrate that the system has not been honestly sold to the public.
