It's pretty clear by now that people who watch the movie are coming out of the theater having seen completely different things.

"What is to be gained in the exact reenactment of the crucifixion when the viewers are invited to watch nails being hammered into the palms of a tortured man? If this isn't an attempt to stir up passions, to promote a dispute, and to again cast darkness on Jewish-Christian relations under the heavy shadow of the cross, then what do we have here?"

What I think is to be gained is: (1) a better understanding of the extent of the sacrifice that Jesus made; and (2) understanding the immensity of His capacity to forgive. I think the reason for portraying Jesus' suffering in such a brutal manner is to drive these points home in a way that words on a page cannot.

I saw absolutely nothing that was intended to promote a dispute.
