Gibson was successful because he understands that Jesus was killed by his own people. Christians tend to forget Christ was a Jew as were most of the early Christians. In the early church you were required to be a Jew prior to converting. The Romans certainly didn't push Jesus as being a Jew when they started the Roman Catholic church due to their disdain for Jews in general and because they had their own aims to accomplish, i.e. power and control. When it comes to power and control you can have Jesus on a cross or a snake on a stick the goal is still the same.
