I suspect from what I used to know about FNMA's operations that the GSE's are better hedged than you think. If there is a potential problem it is only going to be provoked by a Secretary of Treasury who has no business making pronouncements on subjects of great import of which he is in absolute ignorance. I am not defending the managements of FNM/FRE and I agree that strong apolitical oversight should be put in place. This question has to be handled carefully because any perception in the market that FNM/FRE are in trouble could result in world financial
chaos.
