Chinese people getting taller and fatter

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chinese people are getting taller and fatter, Wednesday's China Daily reports.

The average height of boys aged from 7 to 18 has increased 0.48 cm while they have put on 1.35 kg more weight since 2000, the national English-language newspaper quoted a survey by the Ministry of Education (MOE) as saying.

Meanwhile, the average height for girls in the same age group has increased 0.38 cm while they have gained 1.03 kg more weight during the same period.

Improvements in diet and nutrition may have contributed to these changes in size and weight, the paper said.

The survey, covering items like body make-up, physiological functions, physical quality and the child's health status, was done between 2002 and 2003 in Beijing and Chongqing municipalities and 12 other provinces.

The paper also cited another survey by Shanghai-based East China University as saying that men aged 20-25 are 1.75 cm taller on average than 10 years ago and adult women have also increased in height from 1999.

In addition, the MOE survey found an increasing number of overweight and fat students.

In urban areas, the number of overweight boys aged 7-18 has increased to nearly 12 percent over 9 percent recorded in 2000, and that of overweight girls, to 8 percent from 6 percent. In rural areas, both the number of fat boys and girls increased 4 percent over 2 percent in 2000.

The rising obesity in students is manly caused by insufficient physical exercise and overeating of fatty foods with high calories, health experts said.

The Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine said obesity was a common problem among people aged over 50, with the ratio standing at 43.1 percent among males and 55.43 among females.

China's overweight people has topped 200 million, among whom at least 30 million have morbid weight problems, statistics show.
